ISO 22000 – Food Safety Management System

ISO 22000 is a standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization dealing with food safety. It based on HACCP guidelines in accordance with Codex Alimentarius and the management principles of ISO 9001. ISO 22000 is recognized internationally as the most relevant standard supporting the development of a food safety management system (FSMS). This standard can be applicable to any organization within the food chain, regardless of size, including:

• Farming (animal and plant);
• Feed producers;
• Food manufacturers (functional food, plant products, animal products, animal and plant (mixed) products, ambient stable products);
• Catering;
• Transport and storage operators;
• Sub-contractors to retail and food outlets;
• Food packaging and packaging material;
• (Bio) chemical manufacturers.

ISO 22000:2018 (the latest version of ISO 22000) was released on 19^th June 19 2018. As it follows the same High Level Structure (HLS) structure as other widely applied ISO standards, such as: ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, it will be easier to integrate with other management systems.
Applying and maintaining the certificated food safety management system as per international standards such as ISO 22000:2018 or HACCP… allow the organizations in the food chain display their compliance with food related legal requirements as well as demonstrated to their customers about its ability to control food safety hazards and ensure that food products are safe and suitable for consumption.
